"Space is conquered through human action"

Otto Friedrich Bollnow

When we say that existential space is "egocentric," we acknowledge that it varies from one individual to another.

Nevertheless, there exist <general spatial structures>, and these structures are common to all individual "spaces." The best-known studies of these structures come from Gestalt psychology, which shows that people order their environment according to "perceptual laws" given <a priori>, independent of the situation. Piaget refined the principles of perception further in his geometric account. The Gestalt laws make clear that objects are perceived as unified wholes on the basis of "similarity," "proximity," "continuity," and "closure." In general, this implies a figure–ground relationship: a perceptible "figure" must always appear against a less structured "ground."

Gestalt psychology, however, describes abstract "principles of organization" rather than concrete existential space, and in that respect it must be refined in certain fundamental ways.

For example, in a corporate space designed as a "space for decision-making," opposing vertical lines rise up as tension and, at the same time, form an axis expressing the will to unify the space. Continuous horizontal lines bring stability, and these opposing directions are held in balance by the actor — the "decision-maker." The space defined by thresholds, the components of place, becomes a perceptible "figure" through the interplay of vertical and horizontal lines, and it acts on the spatial cognition of human beings, who perceive their environment <a priori>. Within a space ordered by design, the will unfolds as Being-in-the-world (Dasein): the human being, as Dasein, makes the decision. This will rises vertically as what unifies the company, and extends horizontally beyond it.
